A church has stood on this site prior to the Normans and has undergone several restorations with additions like the chancel, porch, bells, and larger windows. The enormous yew tree, common to churchyards and an emblem of Immortality, is estimated to be at least 600 years old and has a celtic cross embedded within its trunk. There are several very old graves including that of Priscilla Wall buried 27th Jan, 1668 with an inscription recorded in the past but now crumbling and half buried: "Why standst ye heere and gaze on me, as I am now so shalt ye be"--very true.
ReplyDeleteI scan all the old graves examing them as important historical records but aware that these individuals once lived, laughed, cried loved etc...that this village has a past, a social history but with the local landmarks standing the test of time and witnesses to those who come and go on life and death's rich journey e.g Crook's Peak, Brent Knoll, Cheddar Gorge etc...Soon the Mendip Hills will witness the Invasion of giant pylons criss-crossing all over them--FOR NOW!!
